Workmen
constructing Foxley Lane in 1895. The small, horse-drawn railway wagons
carried materials to the site and removed excavated earth. |
Built
to serve cottages on the old Lewes Road over Riddlesdown, by the end of
the 19th century the Rose and Crown was a popular spot for picnics. The
original building survived until1929. |

Purley
library has taken 13 images from its extensive collection of photographs
in publishing its calendar for 2004.
The
earliest view, from 1895, shows workmen building Foxley Lane, using a
small, horse-drawn railway to carry material from the site and the age
of the tram car, and nostalgic cameos from the 50s.
A
spokesman from Purley library said: "Besides being a collectors'
item for local residents, the calendars would make an ideal Christmas
gift have moved away from the area, but would like to remember it as it
was." |
